(Now) 43 Local Blog Directories
by Matt McGee on Mar 4, 2009 in MY BEST POSTS, Promotion
Can you help with this post? I’ve put together this list of (currently) 33 43 blog directories where a hyperlocal blogger might want to be listed and linked. Some require payment; some are free. Important: I am certainly not vouching for all of these; some I wouldn’t want our local blogs to come anywhere near! But it’s still a starting place.
Please spread this post around by email, Twitter, social media, however … and invite anyone who’s into local blogging to use the comments to add local blog directories that I’m missing.
Specific Regions
(I’m certain there must be tons more of these….)
Washington Post has a directory of DC-area blogs
CityPages.com has a directory of Minnesota blogs
Minnesota.com has one, too
Newsbobber.com also has a Minnesota blog directory
NYC Bloggers
Austin (TX) Stories
DFW Blogs (Dallas/Ft. Worth) – seems out-of-date or dead
San Diego Bloggers – ditto
Search Maryland blog directory
Paducah (KY) iBlog Directory
Lowcountry Bloggers lists a lot of Charleston, SC, area blogs
LocalMouth’s British Blog Map – pretty cool!
Best Blogs Asia
Boston Weblogs
Boston Blogs
Citizen Rain – aggregator of Seattle neighborhood blogs
Hartford Blogs, from the Hartford Public Library
BayNewsNetwork, from UC Berkeley’s Knight Digital Media Center
Oakland Local blog directory
Local Blog Directories
Outside.in – a blog directory mashed up with local media content
PlaceBlogger
Blogs by City – looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2005 (sheesh)
feedmap.net – spammers have ahold of this one
Loaded Web
WikiCity – technically not a local blog directory, but a wiki-based collection of city guides that invites local bloggers to add themselves to a city blogroll
InOtherNews.us – directory that lists only local news/journalism blogs/sites across the U.S.
General Blog Directories
Best of the Web has a Regional category in its directory.
Blogged.com also has regional listings.
EatonWeb Local News blogs – looks like a strong page
Blog Catalog
Blog Digger
Bloggapedia offers a regional blog directory.
Bloggeries, too.
Blogarama has a “community blog” directory, but a couple thousand blogs are all piled into this one category. How about some regional categories there, blogarama? (And you, too, Blog Explosion.)
Geeky Speaky
LSBlogs – scroll down and look for “By Location” in the left nav column
Globe of Blogs
Blog Universe
Blog Flux
Blog Hub
Blog Hints
Grokodile
Regator: Local Interest blogs
Now it’s your turn to add more in the comments, and I’ll update this post accordingly.

Are there any good opensource or paid products for blog aggregators? The examples you have given here are very good, I wonder if they developed these aggregators or are they using some good products?

How about http://www.citizenrain.com ? It’s not so much a directory as a blog aggregator for the general Seattle area.
Drupal has some great aggregation tools, although you’re going to need serious horsepower if you’re aggregating hundreds of blogs (my experience has been it starts to get bogged down around the 250th or 300th RSS feed you add).

One site I would recommend would be regator.com. It’s a general blog search site, but it has a local intent category, and you can, for example, search for blogs about Boston:

Thanks Matt for a great post!
Good stuff, gang – thanks so much. Just added four to the list above, so we’re at 37 now. Always looking for more.
If you want more general blog directories, consult the list on my blog:
List Of Blog Directories & RSS Feed Directories
I update this WEEKLY, and there are currently 409 entries with NO DEAD LINKS.
Try to submit to 3-5 directories PER DAY. This discipline will pay big dividends over the long run.
Everyone should have an RSS feed from Feedburner.com in order to take advantage of the RSS feed directories.
A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.
Best of success,
Robert A. Kearse
A great list of blogs in the Charleston, SC Area: http://lowcountrybloggers.com/the-big-blogroll/
Thx for the addition, Jared. Up to 38 now.
What a great post! Thanks for sharing this.
Hi, thanks for the link. Obviously, I think highlighting local resources is a great idea. Hopefully this will help bring quality submissions…
You might want to check out http://localhero.biz/. Plenty of AJAXy goodness
Probably best categorised as a local blog directory, but headed towards being alot more. Currently covering Melbourne, Australia as a proof of concept.
Pete
Thx Pete. It looks like a local blog to me. I don’t see much in the way of a directory, or a place other local bloggers can submit their blog to be added. Can you clarify how it’s a local blog directory?
Matt,
Its is cetainly not a local blog. Although is hard to categorise. It has aspects of blog, wikipedia, cms and search engine. Although very much in beta if you drag the map around or click on the tags and categories to see what i mean.
I’ll add the blog submission process in time. But the I really not after more info at the moment just improving the interface and back end.
I’ll keep you posted.
Matt:
When I use the keyword “blog directories” in Google Blog Search, I notice this post is at the top of the listings EVERY DAY.
What technique are you using to stay at he top of the listings??
If you wish to keep the info private, please respond by email with Google Blog Search in the subject line.
Thanks.

Pghbloggers.org. pittsburgh blog site w/ hundreds of local members/blogs
I’ve got a couple of local businesses that cater to a less than web active community….yet most of the local awareness is discovered via local/regional search terms.
We work continuously to try and penetrate the local markets. hey its not easy…..but we keep working at it….every extra local viewer….that is where we are to sread the word.
nice lists, Matt. thanks. There is one local source I need to look at. excellent resource
Local Bloggers can also submit their blog by writing a quick introduction and tagging them with location info on Bighow.com, for free.
