What is hyperlocal blogging?

Hyperlocal blogging is writing about the streets where you live. It’s blogging about local news, local events, local businesses — anything that’s happening in your hometown, city, street, or neighborhood. Hyperlocal blogs often talk about things that traditional media ignores, the stuff that’s too small or not important enough to a wide range of people.

It’s a fast-growing niche, too. With blogs having hit the mainstream, many “regular Joes” are learning how easy it is to start a blog, and they’re often writing about things happening around them at home. Many small business owners are starting hyperlocal blogs in the hopes of connecting with potential customers in their hometown.

Why a blog about hyperlocal blogging?

Although local blogs have been around for years, there’s very little specific information to help guide new bloggers as they start their own local blogs. My goal is for this blog to become a resource that local bloggers of all kinds — new or veteran — can enjoy and use, contribute to, and learn from.

Who’s Matt McGee?

I’m a resident of Tri-Cities, Washington, and the husband of a real estate agent who’s using hyperlocal blogging to share her knowledge about our local area and reach out to new home buyers and sellers. I’m helping her write several hyperlocal blogs, one for each of the main cities in which she works.

I’m a marketing consultant by day, the Assignment Editor for Search Engine Land, a blogger since 2004, an author (of U2 – A Diary), a father, a U2 fan, a LOST zealot, a Pixar-lover, and much more. I spent seven years working in traditional media, from City Desk assignments (including a few bylines) for the Los Angeles Daily News, to small-town TV news and sports anchoring, and hosting a sports call-in show on radio, too.
