City of Seattle promotes neighborhood blogs

by Matt on Dec 22, 2008 in Industry

This is cool — got the tip via this Tweet from Neighborlogs.

The City of Seattle home page is filled with links to information about the nasty winter weather that’s hit the city over the past several days. And one of the links they include says Neighborhood Blogs. Nice!

That’s pretty darn cool if you ask me — great recognition for the power of local blogs to offer great information that traditional media are too big and/or too slow to cover.

ZOMG. That is so cool. First time I have seen a city do this. Have you sent to Greg Sterling? I bet he would be interested…

Thanks for your series! It’s given me some great ideas. I found your site while searching for blogging in multiple cities. I live in Mooresville, NC which is just one of many towns around Charlotte, NC. This is race city if you are into NASCAR and I live about 2 miles from Davidson College if you follow the NCAA and the Cinderella Davidson Wildcats!

Anyway, thanks for the series and I was curious who you use for your blog hosting. It’s obviously not blogger or wordpress, and also do you have thoughts good or bad on using these?

Thanks for the kind words, Scott. Glad you enjoyed the series. All of our blogs are hosted with Dreamhost, and we run Wordpress on all of them. I’m not a fan of Blogger at all, and only marginally a Wordpress.com fan — but Wordpress.com is a lot better than Blogger if you don’t want to do your own hosting/domain.

@Scott. This is weird Scott. I’m in Monroe, NC and I’m leaving for Mooresville in about an hour to have dinner with my daughter. My daughter runs the Charles Mack Center and my son-in-law is an attorney in Mooresville. What are the chances you and I both remarked on Matt’s blog today?

@Steve. That is weird Steve! We probably passed each other on 74 as I went to eat with my Dad who lives in Stallings. All my family is from Monroe, Waxhaw and up here in Mooresville. I like your blog and that is what I’m thinking of starting up for my area. Maybe we could touch base sometime.

Thanks for the forum and the feedback on wordpress Matt! This is great!

I think it’s cool that you two somehow bumped into each other on this blog. :)

Think about it Matt, you are about as far away from us as it gets. Most likely Scott and I did come within 200 ft. of each other as we went to our New Year’s dinners by traveling on Hwy. 74 at roughly the same time. Heck of a communication triangle through the hyperlocalblogger site that day.
