Matt, good series. I just started a hyperlocal blog for my town (http://southboroughspot.blogspot.com/). RSS has been key to content generation. I've set up RSS feeds to anything and everything - local news outlets, Google news, youtube, flickr, twitter, delicious, etc. Even for a small town like mine, there's lots of info out there.

That's a great point, Nick -- and really, a great goal for a local blogger. When you become that well known and trusted, you're really doing things right. There's at least one blog over in Seattle at that level, and of course a lot of the Gawker-type local blogs in the big cities are at that level.

I love this series too...
You mention "you essentially become a source of local news." - I have found that, once you become an "area expert," the local media will contact YOU for information on your community or blog. Once they see you as an expert, your readers really begin to pay attention. :-)

I think you're on to something there, Miriam. And I think that goes beyond local blogging -- aren't the best bloggers generally people who are comfortable engaging a community of readers? I think so. A lot of people clam up when you talk about blogging. I think it's probably something that some people are naturally good at, and others not so much. Good food for thought.

I'm so enjoying the sound and sage advice in this series, Matt.

Something I find I'm doing these days while talking to new prospective clients is trying to gauge whether they are blogging naturals or not. If a new local client is talking about the organizations he belongs to, the events his family is going to, the new businesses he has his eye on, you start to get the feeling he's going to be a great candidate for becoming a hyperlocal blogger.

The feet on the street aspect of this is likely going to become a defining factor. People with a big sense of community involvement and a lot of natural curiosity about local news and events are going to be top candidates for successful hyperlocal blogging, eh?
