Awesome post. I use Netvibes to achieve the same goal, though I guess you could use a number of tools to aggregate. Storytelr just went open source as well.

One thing that might be of use to you is a feed generator tool that I whipped up recently. It's not awesome, but it does the job when you need to search for feeds for your local area: 1rick.com/j01

Hi Matt -

I read your blogs regularly. I'm not a web pro. I started learning in an effort to improve my wife's site and now I'm hooked. In an effort to expand my knowledge I'm helping a friend who is a local bankruptcy attorney improve his site. I'm doing a separate, focused bankruptcy page for each town he serves. I plan on adding a local news feed to each page, much as you describe. Do you think there is any SEO value to the feed, or are they just nice to have? Thanks. Your work speaks directly to many small service businesses.

There are no copyright issues, Jake. This doesn't post their articles. It posts the headline with a link to their site(s) where the full articles are found. Click one of the links and check it out. It's news aggregation, just like Google News, Yahoo News, Google Blogsearch, and countless others do ... only it's targeted specifically to stories from one geographic area.

How will you deal with copyright issues? Don't newspapers and TV stations have copyright rules that don't permit re-posting on blogs? So, if the feed comes to the blog automatically, there is no way to modify the fed content. How's that going to impact one's blog? What is the blog's liability?
