It’s all I can do these days to keep up with the local scene around me, the SEO scene for my other blog, and all the other stuff going on. So some of the links below may well be a few weeks old (or older), but they’re still worth mentioning in this latest hyperlocal news roundup. Leave a comment if anything here catches your eye.

Yes, we are extensively involved on Facebook and Twitter. 10,000+ followers/fans/whatever-you-want-to-call-them (though I’m sure there’s some overlap) between the two. But do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, just hook your RSS feed to Facebook and call it good by sending links. I don’t even put all our links on FB – everything there is done “by hand” with a human-written intro to the link. And we share links that aren’t from our site – maybe the city puts up something interesting, etc. Plus of course, you need to participate in discussion. Last month I got more referrals from FB links than from the large local newspaper with which we are informally partnered.
I jumped into the hyperlocal space 3 1/2 yrs ago. Although back then I didn’t know the word “hyperlocal”. I just knew I wanted to take the internet search engine space down a notch. I felt like everywhere I looked everyone wanted to be everything to everyone. I just wanted to be good at covering one area, one industry. for me that is Vermont, Kids & Family. I guess now I do consider our site, our blog hyperlocal after Outside.in just endorsed us as one of the bloggers they love:

Hey Dana — that’s awesome! Congrats on the recognition and exposure from Outside.in, very well deserved.
That’s a good point, Tracy — making sure there’s a human touch in your Facebook efforts. I’ve found myself un-fanning some pages that have no sign of human life anywhere, just automated posts and links to content posted elsewhere. Thx for the great advice.
