NY Times: ‘Environment is right’ for hyperlocal news

by Matt on Apr 12, 2009 in Industry

nytimes_logoMonday’s New York Times will feature hyperlocal news on page B1 of the paper — that’s pretty good exposure. You can also read the article tonight on the Times’ web site.

It’s not too long, but still makes a good introduction to some of the big picture issues we’ve been talking about here on Hyperlocal Blogger — mainly, what happens to local news if/when the local paper shuts down. The article talks a bit about a few sites you should know by now from reading here: Everyblock (HLB article), Outside.in (HLB article), Placeblogger, and Patch.

“In some ways the environment is right for these start-ups. In the last several years, neighborhood blogs have sprouted across the country, providing the sites with free, ready-made content they can link to. And new tools, like advanced search techniques and cellphones with GPS capability, help the sites figure out which articles to show to which readers in which neighborhoods.”

All in all, it’s a pretty fair assessment of the hyperlocal news scene today, I’d say.

I think the growth of hyperlocal blogs is going to be a pain in the side of newspapers for a long time. The papers need to understand how to better work with these sites and share content.
