Definitely agree re longevity. I tell people I started westwoodblog because I was new to town, working in the city (Boston), and hoped I could get other people to post things about what was going on in Westwood. But it ended up being mostly me. My desire to learn about the town translated into interesting content.

Hi there. I found your site while searching for other small town bloggers. I moved to a suburb of D.C. six months ago and I have been wanting to start a local blog. Your point about longevity is encouraging. I intend to use the blog as a way to get to know my new community better, and also to eventually build a resource for others who are looking for interesting things to do and see in the area. I’m glad you think that being a newcomer is not a drawback!

Persistence is a GREAT addition, Nick – thank you. I’ve been struggling with that myself lately — just not feeling like I want to write most nights. (And being a bit under the weather hasn’t helped.) Gotta get back in the groove and be persistent about it.

That is a brilliant summation of the challenge. Can I suggest one more thing you need? Persistence.

You need to write regularly to build a community of regular readers and you need to be persistent in chasing up stories – in the UK at least, requests from bloggers for information are often ignored. It took me ages to get on the press list for my local Council – now they write to me suggesting stories.
