Wordpress Users: What Theme Do You Use?
by Matt on Mar 2, 2010 in Blogging
A little while back, I came across a Wordpress blog theme that’s been developed specifically for hyperlocal news sites. It’s (appropriately) called The Local, and looks pretty nice to me.

If I ever get around to launching the real Tri-City news site I have in my mind, I’d consider using it. But I don’t think it’s appropriate for the four community blogs we’re running now, none of which are geared toward hard news reporting.
So my questions to all you Wordpress users are as follows:
- What theme are you using for your local blog?
- What do you like about it?
- What do you dislike it about it?
Comments are open, so have at it.

For my main business site I had my own theme created, but I do have a local site (for my clients only) and I used The Station from Woo Themes. It meets my needs and I like it. You can see it at http://SarasotaBusinessNetwork.com.
Matt- I use the Thesis theme but I have under utilized the potential of it to a ridiculous degree.
I use PressRow by Chris Pearson.
The PROS:
1)very clean presentation with a great professional look
2) Image Header capability
3) 2-column format keeps the page organized and reduces the possible *clutter-factor* that can happen with 3 column formats
4) I would recommend TypeKit Fonts as well. The default fonts used by WordPress are bit blasé, and TypeKit will allow you chose a font that’s unique and professional.
CONS:
As of yet, I don’t really have any cons for this theme. It’s been the best one so far.
I use StudioPress Lifestyle theme. I love it! I was set to pay someone a grand or two to custom design a theme, then I stumbled upon a few StudioPress websites.
All StudioPress themes rock. Easy to use and flexible. Their forum is very helpful and the tutorials are well written. With very little website design or HTML experience (except for Godaddy Website Tonight), I was able to create, what I think is a pretty kick ass looking hyperlocal site. Best part about these WordPress themes is how crisp and professional looking they are.
There isn’t much I don’t like about it. Maybe if it was easier to skin the site, making color schemes easy to change. All in all I don’t really have any complaints.
After all the gushing, its important to note I don’t work for StudioPress or Brian Gardner, nor do I sell any affiliate anything for/with them. I just sincerely have had great experiences with StudioPress themes and highly recommend them to others.
For Blog Preston (http://blogpreston.co.uk) I use a custom theme that a mate built for me, but for a new blog I set up for Cardiff City Centre (http://citycentrecardiff.wordpress.com/) I just use a standard wordpress.com theme. Works fine.
I also use the thesis theme.
If you look at Frank’s theme and then my theme you can see how much you can alter the theme!
I use Woo Theme Gazette. I like it. I used StudioPress Church theme for a while.
I’m not completely happy with it but I will take what I can get with out spending lots of money.
I use LiveWire by WooThemes. It’s a magazine-style layout, and it makes the site look WAY more professional than it is.
For InMenlo.com (Menlo Park, CA), we’ve been using Thesis with some plug-ins and mods. Just beginning to explore other options to more of a “magazine” style look.
Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Lots to check out here. Appreciate your willingness to share with everyone. Such a cool community we’re developing.
I use Daily Edition by WooThemes. WooThemes have some great themes that work well for news sites.
gazette. Same as kyle. Like the front slider and optional ad spaces.
@Matt, I actually took out the built-in slider and replaced it with the Featured Content Plugin. I didn’t like how the built in one would not remove the post from the list of posts on the homepage.
I’ve used Semiologic and Semiologic Pro for numerous sites that I’ve done.
I’ve always liked it’s flexibility in terms of layout and design. I know just enough CSS to be dangerous and this theme has allowed me to really create some cool sites.
Plus, it has a lot of SEO benefits baked in, but with all the great plugins that have been developed as of late, that’s really not the selling feature it once was.
